Purchasing a Firearm
The Purchase
Now that you have your HQL...
Research the type of handgun you want to purchase.
Go into a gun store look and get a feel of the gun of your choice.
Ask questions if you are not sure what to purchase, ask for recommendations.
Once you have selected the gun that you want its time to do your paperwork
MSP - Maryland State Police and AFT - Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Paperwork
Remember, handguns can only be purchased every 30 days, unless you are a collector and you must wait 7 days before you can take your handgun home after purchase.
Long guns can be purchased the same day and you are only completing the ATF papework. You do not need your HQL to purchase a long gun.
MSP Paper work is located on the Maryland State Police website.
This form is called a 77r and you can complete it at most gun stores or you can complete it at home.
Once completed you will receive an email from MSP with a pin that you most give to the gun store representative to complete your purchase.
You will pay for your purchase and wait 7 days to receive your letter from the MSP stating that you have "not been disapproved".
Once you have received your letter, you can go back to the gun store where you made your purchase and pick up your merchandise.
The ATF paperwork is done in the store either as a hard copy or done online on a computer.
